R.E. Jones, M. D.
R. E Jones, M. D was born at Greensboro, Ala., June 15, 1860.
He remained there until he was 16 years of age.
He attended private school and later entered Tullibody Academy at Greensboro.
At 16 years of age, he tried to enter some of the eastern medical colleges, but
on account of his youth could not do so.
He taught school up to the time he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
He graduated July 1, 1881. Out of a class of 100 students he was the only colored student.
He remained in Detroit a short while, and then came to Richmond where his mother joined him.
This was August, 1882. He was the first colored doctor to drive around in his own buggy.
He purchased an attractive frame dwelling on Leigh street, just beyond Brooke Ave, remodelling the same.
November 10,1884 he married Miss Daisy McLinn of New Haven, Conn.
He has since purchased a handsome brick dwelling at 110 E. Leigh street, with office attached, in which place he lives in modest splendor.
Recently, he added a brick addition to his present residence.
Dr. Jones is a remarkable character, possessing a fondness for blooded horses
and fine equipages. No one would presume he was colored by the style in which he lives.
His notions are those of the old Virginia aristocrat and regardless of the impressions created he proceeds to act to suit himself and to make a display that a king might envy.
He often drives a double team or has his coachman attired in livery handling the reins while he sits in contentment in the family carriage.
He is a born millionaire and the only regret is that the amount which should have been his has not as yet been placed to his credit in a reliable bank.
His skill as a physician is unquestioned and his practice on the increase. Jovial, good-natured, quiet and above all, mischievous, he is a great favorite among his intimate friends and an object of wonder to those who see him passing swiftly by to attend the many patients who are constantly demanding exercise of his skill.
