Jim Crow Streetcars
June 11, 1904
Summary
“As long as the streetcar law lasts,” the black riders of Richmond plan to walk even if the law lasts “forever.”
Transcription
The Jim Crow Street car law went into effect on June 1st and all cars now have up sign designating the two rear seats for colored people only. This law has cost the street railroad companies the patronage of the colored people as was plainly seen on the first day of its operation.
The towns are small and the colored people can afford to walk without any inconvenience whatever. The boycott by the colored people will last as long as the streetcar law lasts, if forever. The law was absolutely unnecessary and will only prove an inconvenience to the white people who are deprived of two seats and the street railroad company who will lose the entire revenue they used to receive from the colored people.
