North Carolina and the Negro
The Republican State Convention of North Carolina, under the leadership of Congressman Blackburn has taken a long step backwards by passing a resolution calling upon the legislature of that state to submit to the people for their approval a provision whereby the grandfather clause of the constitutional amendment shall be continued in force until 1920 instead of 1908 as now provided.
This is a bold step and it will no doubt attract the attention of the managers of the National Republican Party. Whenever the doctrine of “lily-whitism” has been enunciated in the national councils of the party, it has been put to sleep. Secretary Taft’s recent concessions have been construed in a way that will astonish many people in this country. His advice to the North Carolina Republicans was conservative and to some extent unsatisfactory to the colored people.
He will now have an opportunity to express an opinion of the work of this Negro hating body. We feel sure that he has received his first and last invitation to visit the state during the present political campaign at least and we are of the opinion that he will not be sorry.
In our judgement, the so-called Republican Party will not make good “horse fodder” and it deserves to be “whipped out of its boots” as it certainly will be. It would be well for the colored voters in that state to sit down on a stump and watch the fun. For our part we prefer being eaten by a lion to being killed by a jackass. Both parties can draw their own conclusions.
