Constable Roberts, the Wailes brothers and several others went to the Negro’s house for the purpose of whipping Jim. When they reached the house, they were met by the Negro, who was armed with a shotgun. The Negro opened fire on the party, killing Joe Roberts and seriously wounding Charles Reid, Jr., son of the owner of the plantation. The Negro then jumped through a rear window and fled. He was fired on as he ran and wounded. He was caught and strung up to a limb. It is also reported that the Wailes brothers were wounded. -Time Democrat.
