We have been somewhat surprised to observe that some persons were of the opinion that agitation in England against Lynch law in the United States could do no good, but would have a tendency to make worse our condition.
This view of the situation has been accredited two persons too who were and are friends of the cause, and would not we believe, knowing me do anything to the detriment of the race to which we belong.
We are of the opinion that agitation in any portion of the Civilized lobe against the crowning infamy of the 19th century is now in order and will have a tendency to arouse Christian America to a realization of the terrible condition of a bear's she is fostering.
Foreign influence has not lost its potency.
[Unintelligent]
It would even then pollute her lips.
It is these facts which has led the accomplished journalist, Mr T Thomas Fortune to inquire, β€œIs the white South civilized?”. but why the Howell now going on in the south over the exposures in England?
Why the effort to prove false, facts which are true?
It is because the immigration for which the South has prayed comes from Europe, and the English journals which are foremost in denouncing the mobs of the South are read upon the continent.
It should be plain then to the most disinterested Observer that these assertions of β€œ Carnage and blood.” men roasted, disemboweled, hanged, shot, skinned alive, and mutilated will have a tendency to check all immigration to the southern states and make hopeless the efforts of the agent who might otherwise succeed.
Prosperity refuses to be enjoled by false assertions or won by promises for the future.
The murder of colored men must cease, and the law alone must meet punishment for crimes committed. Lynch law must go!
