<text>The Lunenburg Case continues to attract wide-spread attention and sympathy, manifested in the most substantial way in behalf of the poor women. Solomon Marable and Mary Abernathy were removed to Lynchburg jail for safe-keeping.
…
THAT THREATENED LYNCHING
Later he heard they were going to “white cap" all the colored people around until they made some confess who had murdered Mrs. Pollard. His wife said she was going to her uncle not far away, and your petitioner went part of the way there with her. Next morning (Sunday) your petitioner and his wife determined that they would go to their former home, in North Carolina, and they started off by way of Chase City. Going through that place your petitioner stopped to buy something to eat, while his wife walked on down the railroad. When he started to overtake her, he heard shouting behind him, and looking back he saw several white men coming towards him and calling out, "stop that man!" They frightened your petitioner very much and he commenced to run. The men pursuing him fired several shots and thereby greatly increased his alarm. Your petitioner ran to the woods and thereby escaped his pursuers
Your petitioner being now frightened almost to death, remained in the woods, and at the houses of different Negroes between Chase City and Five Forks until Tuesday morning, when a party of white men. armed with guns and pistols, came up with him and arrested him. Soon after they arrested him, they were joined by Mr. Lucius Pettus, a half brother of Dave Thompson. The men who had arrested your petitioner told him that he had better make a confession, or he would be hung before they got to Mr. Pollard's house and your petitioner, thinking that Lucius Pettus knew about it and would have your petitioner killed if he did not say what Dave Thompson had told him to say, told them that Mary Abernathy and Pokey Barnes killed Mrs. Pollard, while he held her and that Mary Barnes had been a party to the conspiracy to kill her.
Your petitioner was carried to Mrs. Pollard's rouse and the three Negro women were arrested and brought there when the coroner was holding an inquest. Quite a number of persons collected there, perhaps four or five hundred, and your petitioner heard that all of the prisoners were going to be lynched. Late in the evening, Mr. Clements, the constable, who had the prisoners in charge, smuggled them out of the back door in charge of four or five boys and they were got to the woods and marched by by-ways and through the woods all night to the jail at the courthouse, Mr. Clements remaining to put the crowd off with one excuse and another until the prisoners could be lodged in the jail.
When your petitioner was put upon his trial, the confession he had made was proved, and he was convicted. When Mary Abernathy was put upon her trial your petitioner was put on the stand as a witness, and, still under the domination of the terror with which he had been inspired, your petitioner told the same story, and she was also convicted.
On a succeeding day. Pokey Barnes was put on trial. Your petitioner being then convicted, and feeling that here was no hope for him determined that he would tell the truth about it. Being put upon the stand as a witness in said Pokey Barnes' case, your petitioner narrated the facts as he has stated them in this petition.
Whilst testifying to these facts, the aforesaid Lucius Pettus, who was squatting on the floor within three or our feet of your petitioner, winked at your petitioner in a threatening way and whispered to your petitioner, “Put it on Mary Abernathy and Pokey Barnes." Your petitioner was again terrorized by this man's threatening demonstrations and he took the statement back as he had made it, and made the statement anew that implicated the three Negro women, and Pokey Barnes, also was convicted and sentenced to be hanged. Your petitioner had told Capt. Frank Cunningham and Mr. Neblett, the Commonwealth’s Attorney, the true story of the crime, as herein set forth, before he went to the court room to testify in Pokey Barnes' case.</text>

<text>The Norfolk, Va., Recorder continues to confound injustice in the courts with lynching by lawless parties.
There has been no lynching in Virginia since Hon. Charles T. O’Ferrall has been Governor.
As to the slurs cast, we have only to say that through the influence of this journal, Simon S. Walker, was saved from the gallows, three colored men released from the Virginia penitentiary, Peter Cary, pardoned from the same institution, Richard Hewlett, pardoned from jail, Charles Harris, released from jail, Richard Sampson, pardoned from the Virginia penitentiary, Alexander Spottswood released from jail.
Isaac Jenkins, who had been lynched, was defended and acquitted of a charge which would have either hanged him, or placed him in the Virginia penitentiary, with numerous other persons who have been extended similar favors walking the streets of Richmond.
All great evils have increased ere they were eliminated. This was as true of the oppression by England as it was of the slave-system in vogue in this country.
Short-sighted people have always disparaged and discounted the work of agitators and yet have been the first to enjoy the benefits accruing from their tireless labors. Lynch-law must go!</text>

<text>J.P. Morgan Approves Operators' Course in Coal Strike.
Railroad Presidents Confer
Mr. Baer says operators have not changed their attitude, and their purpose to refuse arbitration is as firm as ever.

New York, Aug. 27-- George F. Baer president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railway Company, and the recognized leader of the fight of the coal operators against the anthracite miners of Pennsylvania, arrived in this city yesterday from Philadelphia, and after transacting some business at his office went to the office of J. P. Morgan in Wall Street and conferred with the great financier.
Mr. Steele, of the firm of J.P. Morgan & Co., and Mr. Stotesbury, the Philadelphia partner of Mr. Morgan's firm, were also present.
It was learned late yesterday afternoon that another conference was held at the offices of the Ontario and Western Company. Those attending this meeting were President Fowler, of the Ontario and Western; President Baer of the Philadelphia and Reading, and President Truesdale, of the Deleware, Lackawanna and Western.
Later President Baer was seen. He said: "We have simply exchanged notes regarding the strike of the anthracite miners. The situation is unchanged. The assumption that my visit to J.P. Morgan signified a change in our attitude to the strike is entirely erroneous. I had not seen Mr. Morgan since his return from Europe, and was naturally anxious to talk with him with regard to his general situation.
"I will say that our fixed purpose to refuse to arbitrate this dispute is as firm as ever. There will be no arbitration. We will not allow it. Generally speaking, we are satisfied with conditions."
From another and equally reliable source it was learned that Mr. Morgan declared yesterday that he positively will not in any way interfere with the progress of the strike of the miners. He has expressed to the coal magnates his general approval of the conduct of their side of the struggle. The authority for his statement is a coal president, who declined to allow the use of his name in this connection.</text>

<text>As the time approaches for the convening of the legislature for the purpose of arranging the mode, manner and date for the holding of the constitutional convention it is becoming plainly evident that somebody is thinking that a mistake has been made.
It was declared to be the purpose of this convention to disfranchise the citizen of color and to engraft this act of disfranchisement in the constitution itself.
But since that time a political landslide has taken place and carried down with it the Democratic Party and its fondest hopes.
The victory was so emphatic and complete that the Republicans have an overwhelming majority in both branches of congress, together with a President of the United States who has never yet failed to respond to the demands of the party managers, who were instrumental in placing him there.
Certain political leaders are now pointing to the constitutions of the several southern states and dwelling upon those instruments which plainly disfranchise the Negro.
This has alarmed all of them as it is evident that the purpose to make operative by congressional action the 14th Amendment of the United States which provides for the reduction of representations in all states where this has been done.
Speaking on this point, the Richmond, Va., Dispatch of the 15th inst., cautiously remarks:
“As we said in our last issue, Congressmen Hay and Swanson […] the belief that success will [..] and any attempt made to reduce representation in the South because of Negro disfranchisement. Indeed, our Washington correspondent is informed that the President will discountenance the movement. At any rate we do not see how Virginia could be touched by any Federal law on that subject. There is nothing in the Virginia Constitution or statutes, which makes any distinction with regard to suffrage on account of race or previous condition of servitude. So in no event would Virginia be affected—except in so far as the discussions in Congress might give warning or be of profit to the Virginia constitutional convention, which will assemble next year.”
What does this mean? This journal has been virtually the official mouthpiece of the Democratic Party of Virginia, in-so-far as it managers represent that organization.
If the Negro disfranchising clause is not in the constitution of Virginia now, and the managers are already pointing to the fact as an argument against the reduction of representation in Virginia, who believes that it will be placed there in the face of the overwhelming Republican majority which confronts the Democratic Party in Congress?
It may be that those states which have changed their constitutions may yet be found making up test cases to prove their own Negro-disfranchising laws unconstitutional or reconvene their constitutional conventions and wipe it off the statute books.
The situation is becoming embarrassing to the politicians and amusing to some of the people.
Affairs are adjusting themselves and as usual, God and right seem to be on the side of the Negro.</text>

Prospect of Losing Their Homes Stirs Property Owners to Action
Centralia. Pa., July 25.-- Stirred to action by the prospect that their homes are likely to be swallowed by the Centralia mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal company, more than 50 merchants, miners and professional men met in the council chambers here and formed a property owner's’ protective league. It was unanimously decided that those present, with as many more landowners as can be induced to join will put up a legal fight against the robbing of mine pillars supporting the surface. The entire anthracite region will be asked to join in the movement. The lehigh company claims the right to remove these supports on notifying the surface owners, who paid the coal company for the land, to move.</text>

<text>A farmer in Farm and Ranch, on the subject of wife culture, tells of his own delinquencies and how he was reformed. Of the wife he says:
“She needs some kindly notice and appreciation from the boss and help in her household duties and I used to take pleasure in doing that! but from some cause have been rather careless of late years, but since reading the Household have gone back to my old self; and did not have to take Uncle Snort’s remedy, either. I simply got up early one morning and made a good fire in the stove, put on a kettle of water, brushed around and brought in a couple of pails of water, brushed around and brought in a couple of pails of water, and went to the garden. Of course, I was expecting her to notice me, but not so. The following morning I did the same thing, but found a large notch cut in the well curb when I went for the water. I immediately got after the small boy, but he declared his innocence and said his mamma did it. I called on her for an explanation, and she said it was to remind me of my kindness to her and the fact that they were the only two buckets of water I had drawn in two years, and I notice that ugly gash every morning but I’m still keeping up the same old way.”</text>
