On the night of August 21 Finley waylaid and robbed Major James Darst a very prominent citizen of Dublin. He was captured the next day, indicted on the same day, and on the day following was sentenced to death. The date of execution was fixed for Friday, Sept. 15th. WANTED THE SENTENCE COMMUNTED. Recently numerous letters, signed by many of the best known men in Pulaski, have been received at the Governor’s office, asking that Finely’s sentence be commuted for thirty or sixty days, in order that there may be gotten before the Governor various facts tending to show reason why the prisoner should not suffer the death penalty. One letter to the Governor stated that it was thought every juror who tried this case, and the Judge and Commonwealth’s Attorney, besides a large number of citizens, would sign a petition for commutation of sentence for life imprisonment. THE GOVERNOR APPEALED TO. Within the past day or two a large number of letters have been received at the Governor’s office, asking for the reprieve. The fact that the death penalty was imposed for the crime of robbery, which is a very rare punishment for this crime, seems to have stirred up sympathy for the Negro. The extreme penalty was visited upon him because of the fact that he beat Major Darst nearly to death and then robbed him. It is thought he intended killing Major Darst, who is one of the most widely-known and popular men in Pulaski county. When arrested, he did not express any surprise, but wanted to know if the county would pay him for the time lost while in jail. He did not ask what he was charged with, and evidenced no surprise. When carried to jail he sent for Attorney F. S. Collier, saying he wanted to make his will, and then asked for some laudanum. Burge had a hearing before Justice Furners at the Court House Thursday morning, when he was confronted by his daughter, Miss Ida Burge. The girl, who is quite pretty, told her story and it a pitiful story it was, in a straight-forward way, and as she told of her own father’s inhuman treatment she almost broke down. From her account her father has been intimate with her since the first of January, committing his crime under threat of punishment, and since then the girl’s life has been a hell on earth. Burge is fifty-five years old and father of a large family, all of whom are honorable and highly respected by their neighbors. The blow to the family is a terrible one and they have the sympathy of all their friends. Fox Hill is one of the quietest and most orderly places in Virginia and the report of the arrest of Burge has stirred the citizens of the place as they have never been aroused before. H. Bayton’s Wife. Saluda, Va., July 23-Special- Richard Walden was indicted here by a special grand jury, charged with attempt to commit rape on R. H. Bayton’s wife. On last Saturday R. H. Bayton, was busy at his store, which is about one eighth a mile from his residence. This man, Walden entered the house through the front door seized Mrs. Bayton, threw her down, choked her and bruised her badly and tried to drag her in a private room. Mrs. Bayton made an outcry and two colored men heard her scream and came to her rescue. Walden is a bad character, yet the white people are trying to shield his crime. He is now in jail. Two years ago he served a year for murder of a white man in Lancaster County. To the surprise of all concerned the State Attorney allowed the case to be continued until September. The attorney for the defense asked for continuance, which the court declined to give and said it would allow them two days to prepare for the defense. But later District Attorney agreed to allow the case to go over until the next term for scarcely any reasonable ground. In the case of Sim Bagby who was charged with attempt on a white woman a few months ago, the Judge was notified and he came here and held a special court, tried and convicted him to be hanged in one day with very slight evidence. B. Barringer of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Va., could have the audacity to criticize the weakness of any people or belittle their efforts to succeed along all lines of legitimate endeavor in the face of the scandalous record of their own people. Four white men are now on trial at Chesterfield, near Columbia, South Carolina. They are known as John and Harvey Jackson and another brother, also Tom Skeen. Their crime is one of the most fiendish in the criminal history of this country. Their victim was Miss Cassie Boon, a beautiful young girl who had Indian blood in her veins. She was partial to Sam Woodward and this aroused the anger of the Jacksons, who shot at him while he in company with Tom Munn was walking with Miss Boon. The crime was committed about four weeks ago, and was of too horrible a nature to relate. Suffice it to say that they kept her a prisoner in the woods for a day and a night, and then slashed her with knives set her clothes on fire, she ran for half a mile a veritable living torch. She ran until she was exhausted and only lived a short time after being found. This was the act of four white men, Dr. Barringer. Search your history, pull down from the archives of the University the record of the savage tribes of the world and show us a case which for devilish ingenuity and malignant atrocity will surpass the hellish crime in the southern part of Christian America. This occurs too, Dr. Barringer in the states where you have just delivered your philippic against the barbarism of the Negro. Is there anything, sir, to equal the fiendishness of these white men? Our greatest misfortune is the disposition of some of our people to practices the vices of the white man, rather than emulate his virtues. If this crime had been committed by citizens of color, it would have been the subject for comment from Maine to Texas. What will be done with these men? What has become of that fiery indignation which escapes every white man to grasp him rifle and cast his eye towards the rope. There is no call for a sheriff’s posse to protect the prisoners. The Governor is not asked for troops. The story is soon told. The beautiful girl had Indian blood in her veins. This spirit of injustice and lack of fair-play can-not last forever, and the time will yet come when the blind will not only see, but the prejudiced will be made to obey the laws as laid down by our forefathers. Sunday morning Anderson left his home to have his wound dressed and on his way met several friends, who expressed themselves as being glad to see him out again. Somehow or other the colored man heard of the plot to drive him away, and when the men went to his house several nights ago to carry out their purpose he was ready for them and opened fire on them from an upper window with a shotgun. The men being unable to shield themselves took to flight, and one of them was shot in the leg and so badly wounded that he had to be carried home by his comrades. Dr. Bowdoin was called in and succeeding in picking eighty no. 3 shot out of the lacerated leg.
