[Barnwell S.C., Recorder.]
In upper Richmond County on Thursday July 8th a white man by the name of “Hack Fetner” attempted to outrage a little colored girl 9 or 10 years of age. He was seen by two colored women and the screams of the girl and the approach of the women frightened the brute from accomplishing his hellish purpose. The little girl is the daughter of Moses and Sallie Bolter who lives ten or eleven miles from the city on the camp ground road. This information came to us by a most reliable source as a reporter for the Recorder talked with Mrs. Mary Rossline Ore, who said she and another woman named Tena Gantt saw the white brute when he enticed the child into a barn and there attempted to carry out his beastly lust.
After the child broke loose from him they questioned her and the sobbing little creature told them all. The father of the girl it is said was induced to not report the matter to the authorities because he was entreated to not do so by the family of the man who attempted this diabolical deed. There was nothing in the daily papers of this affair.
